Versión menos imaginativa, y también algo más fiel a la novela de Hawthorne, que la adaptación muda de Victor "Seastrom" con Lillian Gish. Hizo otra adaptación Wim Wenders en los años 70; que debe de ser la más visible en conjunto, pues aún hay otra adaptación más reciente, un horror de película que no hay que ver; lo dirigió Roland Joffé en 1995, con Demi Moore y sin rastro de Hawthorne. Hay una versión más de 2015.
